Haibane Renmei- Anime Review

Haibane Renmei is a quiet anime. I would say Haibane Renmei is a fantasy drama This anime is hard to pin exactly what makes it so interesting, but between the characters and the strange world it seems to fit.

The Plot

Rakka a newly hatched Haibane(a being like an angel, the name meaning charcoal feathers), doesn't know who she is or where she came from like all new born Haibane. After getting her halo, and wings she is relieved she is not alone as all the Haibane live together in a place called "Old Home".

The role of the Haibane is to have a job in the gated city of Gilie until their "day of flight". The day of flight is the only time they can escape the walled city of Gilie where until then only the crows, and the mysterious people called the toga can come and go. Rakka must work hard to find her place and a job in this strange world.

My Review

I loved this anime the art, the characters and the tragic story. This anime may have angel like beings but be warned this story is not a happy one, though the ending may have a brighter side. Haibane Renmei does have spiritual undertones and themes of redemption, though even non-religious people like me can enjoy it. I give this anime an 7/10.
